Shichon temperament

Affectionate: The Shichon designer breed is loyal to their owners and shows love and affection to their owners. This includes any family member and children if they are part of a family.

Companionship: Shichon dogs are perfect for those living by themselves or others who want a small, loyal companion. They love spending time with their owners, and their small size makes them ideal as a lapdog.

Playful:
Although they are small, this breed still loves to play! Whether it’s with adults, children, or other animals, they love interacting and playing. Because of their smaller size, you need to be careful not to injure them, especially if children are playing with them.

Therapy Dogs:
Their loyalty and strong sense of companionship make Shichon ideal emotional support and therapy dogs. They will gladly spend much-needed time by their owner’s side and love spending intimate time with people they know and love.

Watchdog:
Don’t let their size fool you – Shichons are protective and not afraid to protect their owners. Even if their size is not always a serious threat, they stay alert and bark at intruders.

  1. Intelligent: Shichons are intelligent dogs that can learn commands and tricks relatively quickly. Training sessions should be positive, reward-based, and consistent.
  2. Adaptable: Shichon puppies are adaptable to various living environments, including apartments or houses with yards. They are often well-suited for indoor living.
  3. Shichon puppies can make wonderful companions for individuals and families who appreciate their friendly, affectionate, and adorable qualities. When considering a Shichon puppy, it’s important to research reputable breeders who prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs. Spend time with the puppies and their parents to ensure their temperament aligns with your family’s lifestyle and preferences.

Shichon Breed history

As a designer breed, the Shichon is a crossbreed between the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu.  The exact year people started breeding Shichons is unknown, but it was in the 1990s range and probably originated in the United States.

The original goal of the Shichon was to have a small dog with a mild personality and affectionate heart.

Because it is a designer breed, the American Kennel Club does not recognize the breed.  However, there are different clubs and fan groups throughout the United States.

Breeds that are similar to Shichons include Cavachons, Shih Tzus, and Bichon Frises.

Shichon Average size

The Shichon is a small breed. Adult dogs stand around 9-12 inches tall at the shoulder and only weigh 10-15 pounds.

Average Shichon lifespan

Shichons have an average lifespan for dogs of 12-14 years, although some have been reported to live 16-18 years.

Shichon body features

Shichons have soft and fluffy coats that come in a variety of colors. Common colors include cream, silver, black and white, brown and white, chocolate, and other combinations.

Keeping Your Shichon Puppy Healthy

Although it is a new breed, the Shichon is overall a healthy breed.

Common in some smaller dog breeds, they sometimes have dental problems, particularly with early tooth loss or gum implications if dental care and regular teeth cleanings are not done.

Because of their hairy ears, it is also essential to make sure the ears stay dry and clean; otherwise, they can develop ear infections.

Because of their small size, it is critical to use caution when playing with them.  Children must be taught how to play properly with Shichon dogs so the dog is not injured.

Like all dog breeds, they are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, two of the most common health issues among dogs.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or potential lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from too much running on hard surfaces, especially when they are puppies.

Typical Shichon Allergens

Even though many Shichons are known not to shed as much, it does not mean they don’t have any allergy concerns.

Dead skin cells, called dander, cause allergens.  These dead skin cells are shed by any animal, including humans.  The key to reducing allergens and their negative effects is to keep your Shichon regularly groomed and clean.

If you have someone in your home with allergy concerns, it is good to consult your family physician before bringing a Shichon home.

  • Are Shichons hyper?
Shichons are moderately active. They are not your stereotypical hyper, yappy toy dog, but they do have energy and active minds. They will love to play and run around, but they also love to snuggle on the couch sometimes.
  • Do Shichons bark a lot?
Shichons are watchful and alert, and may warn you when someone is at the door. However, they are not a particularly yappy breed.
  • Will my Shichon wander off?
Shichons typically like to stay with their people, and usually live inside, so they don’t have a high wanderlust potential. However, it’s still a good idea to watch your Shichon when you are outside.
  • Are Shichons aggressive toward strangers?
Shichons are naturally friendly, and usually get along with everyone. They love people! However, all dogs have it in them to get aggressive if they feel threatened. Socialize your Shichon puppy well at a young age.
  • Can I leave my Shichon alone?
Because they are social companion dogs, Shichons need a lot of attention. They don’t like to be left alone, and can get separation anxiety. If you have a busy schedule, the Shichon may not be the dog for you. That said, Shichons can be crate trained and left by themselves for short periods of time.
  • Why are Shichons called “teddy bear dogs”?
Shichons are called “teddy bear dogs” because of their soft, fluffy coats and cuddly natures.
  • Are Shichon puppies hard to potty train?
Because they are a small breed with small bladders, it can take patience to house train Shichon puppies. Be prepared to work at it with your Shichon puppy, but rest assured that's it worth it!
  • Do Shichons need a lot of exercise?
The Shichon is a moderately active breed, so they only need a moderate amount of exercise. They like to play, but don’t make good running buddies!
  • Do I really need to trim my Shichon?
You should keep your Shichon trimmed, at least around the eyes and mouth. If you don’t keep your Shichon trimmed in these areas, his hair could get long and start falling in his eyes and mouth and irritating him.
  • What did breeders have in mind when they developed the Shichon?
When breeders crossed the Bichon Frise and the Shih-tzu, they wanted to create a small dog with a mild personality and a gentle, affectionate heart. They got what they wanted!
