Housedog: Havanese dogs like being outside as long as they are with their owners or another human. However, they do not well if they are kept outside for long periods of time by themselves.
It’s important to note that while these traits are generally characteristic of Havanese, individual dogs can vary in personality due to genetics, upbringing, and socialization. Proper training, socialization, and a loving environment are essential for helping Havanese develop into well-mannered and happy companions.
The Havanese name comes from the capital of Cuba – Havana.
The exact ancestry is unknown, but it is assumed that many other Toy breeds have an impact on the Havanese line, including the Bichon Frise, Maltese, and several Toy Poodle lines.
The earliest Havanese ancestors were brought to Cuba by the Spanish in the 1600s and 1700s. As the breed developed in Cuba, it began being associated with the wealthy and powerful of the island.
In the early 1900s, the breed was now well known, but a shift came in 1959 when Fidel Castro took over Cuba. Many Cubans left the country and went to the United States, and several brought their small Havanese dogs with them.
In the 1970s, an American couple was able to track down several of these Havanese dogs, and they worked to establish the breed and the Havanese Club of America in the United States.
And their hard work paid off!
The breed began gaining popularity in the United States and around the world, and in 1996 the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Havanese dog breed.
Havanese puppies are considered a Toy breed, and they are not large dogs.
Adult Havanese dogs are usually 8-11” tall at the shoulders and weigh about 7-13 pounds.
The Havanese breed has a longer lifespan than many dog breeds. It is not unusual for them to live 14-16 years or longer.
One of the most distinctive features of the Havanese breed is its gorgeous coat. Their hair is usually a long, soft, silky coat that has a luxurious feel and appearance.
As a Toy breed, Havanese dogs also have a distinct small size. They are also known for their larger, soft eyes and a curled-over tail.
With their long, silky coats, Havanese dogs should be groomed daily. Not only does daily grooming remove loose hair, but it also removes dirt and helps prevent knotting and other hair issues.
If the hair gets too long, it should also be trimmed or clipped as necessary. Some of this depends on the owner’s preference and how much your dog is shedding.
The Havanese dog is generally a clean dog, but it will need to be bathed occasionally. Watch the coat for dirt, clumps, or other signs that your dog needs a bath.
Havanese dogs are generally a healthy breed, but there are a few things their owners should know.
First, even though they are small, they have a lot of energy that needs to be burned off with activity and exercise. Taking regular walks and other physical activity is necessary.
Havanese puppies are also known for eating their droppings. They usually stop doing this as they grow older, but owners should make sure they immediately remove any stool or droppings.
Because of their larger eyes, they can also develop some eye problems. The main thing to watch for is redness, irritation, or dust and debris in the eyes.
Like all dog breeds, Pugs are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, two of the most common health issues among dogs.
Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or potential lameness if not addressed.
One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from too much running on hard surfaces, especially when they are puppies.
Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells. These skin cells are shed by any animal, including humans.
Because of their longer and silky hair, Havanese dogs are not the most allergen-friendly dog. However, their allergens will be lower if they are brushed regularly and kept clean.
If you have someone in your home with animal allergy concerns, it is good to consult your family physician.
