overview of the Mini Bernedoodle Dog Breed

Do you love the loyalty, friendliness, and fun attitude of the Bernese Mountain Dog, but you don’t like how much it sheds or how big the breed is? If shedding and size are a concern, then Mini Bernedoodle puppies are a great breed for you.

Called a designer crossbreed because they are a hybrid of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, Mini Bernedoodles bring the best characteristics from both breeds. From the Bernese Mountain Dog, they bring companionship and fun, and from the Poodle they bring intelligence and lower allergy levels.

If a Standard Bernedoodle is too large for your home, then Mini Bernedoodles offer a great alternative. With their smaller size, Mini Bernedoodles work excellent for smaller homes and apartments.

If you want a smaller dog that is devoted to your family and children, will make an excellent companion, and loves play and interaction, then adopt your Mini Bernedoodle puppy today!

Mini Bernedoodle temperament

Companionship: Mini Bernedoodles have a top goal of receiving attention, love, and care from humans. They want to be with people whenever possible – it doesn’t matter if it is playing games, snuggling on the sofa, or going on a walk!

Intelligence: Mini Bernedoodles are an intelligent breed that can be quickly trained. They also do well in adapting to various situations and new conditions quickly.

Loyalty: Pulling from the Bernese Mountain Dog, Mini Bernedoodles have a strong commitment to their families and especially children. They are sometimes referred to as “the velcro breed” because of the strong bond they develop with their owners.

Playfulness: Known for their love of playing and goofy sense of humor, Mini Bernedoodles take the definition of “a dog that loves to play” to the next level. They love doing any activity or event with humans.

Stubbornness: Mini Bernedoodle puppies sometimes show the stubborn traits of the Bernese Mountain Dog, although they usually outgrow this trait as they get older. The key is to train your Mini Bernedoodle puppy with consistency and patience, especially when they are young.

Adaptability: Bernedoodles can adapt well to various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation.

Good with Children and Pets: When properly socialized, Bernedoodles can be good with children and other pets. Early exposure to different people, animals, and environments can help shape their behavior positively.

It’s important to work with a reputable breeder who focuses on producing healthy and well-socialized puppies. Additionally, early and consistent training, proper socialization, and regular exercise are essential for raising a well-adjusted and happy Bernedoodle. Keep in mind that individual puppies can vary widely, so spending time with the puppy’s parents and asking the breeder about their breeding practices can give you a better idea of what to expect.

Mini Bernedoodle Breed history

The Bernedoodle breed as a whole is a recent crossbreed originating in the early 2000s.

The original goal with the Bernedoodle family – Toy, Mini, and Standard – was to have a good companion dog that was also hypoallergenic and a low shedder.  The combination that seemed ideal for this dog combination was mixing a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle.

The result is a designer dog that combines the intelligence and hypoallergenic traits of the Poodle with the loyalty and companionship of the Bernese Mountain Dog.

It also helps stabilize some of the health concerns associated with the Bernese Mountain Dog.

Mini Bernedoodles use a Bernese Mountain Dog for the female and a smaller Poodle for the father.

While the most popular Mini Bernedoodles are first-generation crossbreeds, some breeders have started breeding multigenerational Bernedoodles to emphasize specific traits.

Mini Bernedoodle Average size

Although the exact size varies on the Poodle used to sire the litter, Mini Bernedoodles are usually 12-22 inches in height as adults and weigh around 25-49 pounds.

Average Mini Bernedoodle lifespan

As a new crossbreed, the Mini Bernedoodle’s lifespan is not fully known.  However, many experts agree that 12-15 years is an accurate number.

Mini Bernedoodle body features

Mini Bernedoodles usually have colorful coats and beautiful exterior.  Some Mini Bernedoodles will have a more solid-colored coat and fewer external markings.

Many have a dominant black or white color on their back, around the eyes, and on the legs.  This is mixed with a white or light-colored chest.

Many Mini Bernedoodles also have white markings on their tails, paws, and mouth.  Some also have tan or brown markings mixed with the black and white.

grooming Your Mini Bernedoodle Puppy

While Mini Bernedoodle’s coats do favor the Poodle, that doesn’t mean they do not require regular care and grooming.

As a crossbreed, some Mini Bernedoodles have thicker, longer hair while others have shorter and curlier hair.

The coat should be regularly brushed several times a week with a slicker brush.  It should also be trimmed several times a year.

If they are properly brushed and groomed, Mini Bernedoodles do not need to be bathed regularly due to oils in their coat and skin.  If they become muddy or dirty, then a bath is usually necessary.

Keeping Your Mini Bernedoodle Puppy Healthy

Because the breed is still young, there are not a lot of specifics known to the Mini Bernedoodle’s exact health conditions.  However, most agree that the breed is relatively healthy and not subject to any disease that is not also relevant to either the Poodle or Bernese Mountain Dog.

Due to their floppy ears, you will want to check regularly behind the ears for infection.  To prevent infection, make sure the ears completely dry out whenever your Mini Bernedoodle becomes wet.

Because of their smaller size, especially when a puppy, you do need to teach children how to play and interact with a Mini Bernedoodle properly to avoid injury.  If you have children, teach them how to play with their new Mini Bernedoodle carefully and appropriately.

Like all dogs, Mini Bernedoodles are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or lameness if not addressed.

One of the best ways to prevent this is by keeping your dog from excessive running on hard surfaces.  This is especially vital when they are a puppy.

Typical Mini Bernedoodle Allergens

With Poodles being used in the breeding, many make the false assumption that Mini Bernedoodles will be allergy-free.

Allergens are caused by dander, which is dead skin cells.  Any animal, including humans, shed these dead skills. And while Mini Bernedoodles do shed less than Bernese Mountain Dogs, this does not eliminate dander or allergens.

One of the factors of any Bernedoodle’s allergen level is the coat.  As mentioned earlier, some coats will be thicker with wavier hair, while others have shorter and curlier hair.  Because Bernedoodles are a crossbreed, it isn’t easy to determine the exact characteristics of the puppy’s coat when they are young.

If you have a family member with allergen concerns, it is always good to consult with your family physician.

  • What colors can Mini Bernedoodles be?
Bernedoodles can be any combination of black, white, and brown. Recently, breeders have come out with merle Bernedoodles as well, which are black, gray, and white marbled. Puppies with rare coat colors will be more expensive.
  • What is a "Phantom Bernedoodle"?
“Phantom” refers to a type of coloring. “Phantom” Bernedoodles are one main color with “tips” of a different color. Picture a Rottweiler or Doberman and that is the “phantom” type of coloring.
  • What type of Poodle is in Mini Bernedoodles?
Mini Bernedoodles come from crossing Bernese Mountain dogs and Mini Poodles. It’s harder to breed Bernese Mountain dogs with Mini Poodles than with Standard Poodles, so Mini Bernedoodles are usually more expensive than Standard Bernedoodles.
  • As a crossbreed, are Mini Bernedoodles healthier than their purebred parents?
Yes, mixed breeds do tend to be healthier than their purebred parents. Some say that first-generation Bernedoodles are the least likely to develop serious diseases.
  • Are Mini Bernedoodles harder to breed than Standard Bernedoodles?
Yes, smaller Bernedoodles are harder to breed than standard Bernedoodles. In general, this means that the smaller the Bernedoodle, the more expensive it will be.
  • Are Mini Bernedoodles yappy?
Mini Bernedoodles are moderate barkers. How vocal they are depends on the individual.
  • Are Mini Bernedoodles more high-strung than Standard Bernedoodles?
A lot of this depends on the individual personalities of the dogs! However, it has been observed that Mini Bernedoodles do tend to be more energetic than Standard Bernedoodles.
  • Do Mini Bernedoodles make good house dogs?
Yes. Due to their smaller size Mini Bernedoodles do better with apartment living than Standard Bernedoodles.
  • Do Mini Bernedoodles suffer from separation anxiety?
Yes, they can. Mini Bernedoodles sometimes get attached to their masters to the point of separation anxiety. Sometimes, though, they just need small steps and practice to be able to stay at home alone - proper training can help prevent this!
  • Do Mini Bernedoodles have curly hair and coats?
Mini Bernedoodles can definitely have curly coats. However, they may have straight or wavy coats as well. It’s hard to predict what a crossbreed will look like. Mini Bernedoodles with straight coats will shed more than Bernedoodles with wavy coats.

Sara SutherlandWe just picked up our mini Bernedoodle from the airport and he’s incredibly sweet. I appreciated the communication with the breeder and with Infinity Pups along the way. It was a bit unnerving to pay for everything via cash app. But, the clear and consistent communication from the breeder and infinity pups made me feel like it would all work out, and it did! Our pup made the PA to CA trek and arrived super happy. We talked with another breeder who advertises on Infinity Pups and he also seemed pretty great, but ultimately being able to do a video chat to meet the pup was a big factor for us as we live across the country. I’d definitely recommend infinity pups and I’d recommend working with a breeder that you’ve researched and had a positive conversation with.
Michael SusiJoel with Puppy Love was excellent to work with from start to finish. I was referred to Joel months before I was ready to adopt, but Joel was happy to start the conversation and answer all of my questions. Once I was ready to adopt, Joel was very communicative, responsive, and helpful throughout the entire process. My Mini Bernedoodle puppy, Enzo, was clearly born and raised in good hands with Joel. I would highly recommend working with Joel with Puppy love.
Gurprit C. We lost our beloved 16 & a half yr old Cockinese rescue dog in October. Having searched all rescues near and far for months with no success, we finally found Infinity Pups. And, we changed our minds about getting another dog who looked like our dog or another breed like a Cockapoo when we saw Cade, a Mini-Bernadoodle f1B who was born and raised by Miriam and Henry Esh in Fort Plain, NY. We fell in love with Cade immediately but proceeded slowly as we were still in mourning and did not want to make a rash decision about him. Miriam is a very kind, patient and forthright person who took my calls on multiple occasions and answered all my questions. She also left me messages back if I couldn't reach her. Miriam went above and beyond, helping us to find the most reliable, safest and inexpensive transportation as well. Cade is just the greatest dog. It's obvious that he has been well-socialized, well-loved by her children and he's a highly intelligent and easy to train dog. The Esh family did most genetic testing with him and our vet thinks that he's a really great dog as well. Even though he's a different breed altogether from our beloved dog that passed away, he's much like him...very intelligent, sensitive, snuggly yet highly playful and active with our other dogs. We would like to send our love and thanks out especially to the Esh family for raising such a beautiful soul. And, to Infinity Pups. Cade was apparently the last to be adopted from the litter, but sometimes the best things are saved for last and are part of God's plan. We are eternally grateful.
Christopher CWe recently added a Bernedoodle-mini to our family. The website made it easy to find a puupy we liked. The breeder Casondra was great, responsive, friendly and handled our schedule. Our new puppy is a joy, thank you to everyone who made this possible.
